Can You Self-Host Firebase? An Honest Answer
Some version of this question comes up constantly: can you self-host Firebase?
The short answer is no — and anyone telling you otherwise is either selling something or talking about a different thing. But the short answer is also not very useful, because the reason people ask is rarely “I want to run Firebase on a box in a cupboard”. It is usually one of these:
- We have a data residency or compliance requirement.
- We are worried about vendor lock-in.
- We want to avoid a surprise bill.
- We want to run the whole stack locally for development or CI.
Those have different answers, and some of them are good ones. Let’s go through it properly.
Why Firebase itself cannot be self-hosted
Firebase is not a distributable piece of software. It is a set of managed services running on Google Cloud — Cloud Firestore, Firebase Authentication, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions, Hosting — with no on-premise distribution and no source release for the server side. Firestore in particular is backed by Google’s internal storage infrastructure. There is no binary to download because there is no binary.
What Google does publish is:
- The client SDKs, which are open source.
- The Firebase Local Emulator Suite, which runs Firestore, Auth, Functions, Storage, Pub/Sub and Hosting on your own machine.
The emulator is genuinely excellent, and it covers the “run the stack locally” case completely. It is built for development and testing, though — it is not a production deployment target, and it is not a compliance answer.
What people usually mean
“We have data residency requirements”
This is the case where you do not need self-hosting at all — you need to choose the right region. Firestore lets you pick the location when you create the database, including several European multi-region and regional locations. That decision is permanent for the lifetime of the database, so it is worth getting right up front.
If your requirement is stricter than “data stored in region X” — for example, no US company may be able to compel access to the data at all — then Firebase is not the right foundation, and no amount of configuration will make it one. That is a real constraint and it points at a different database entirely.
“We are worried about lock-in”
This is the most common reason, and it is worth separating into two layers.
Your data is not especially locked in. Firestore documents export cleanly, and the document model maps onto plenty of other databases. Migrating is work, but it is ordinary work.
Your tooling is where lock-in actually bites. If your team’s entire workflow runs through a proprietary admin panel, a vendor’s hosted CMS, or a low-code tool that holds your schema definitions, then leaving means rebuilding all of it. This is the layer you can genuinely control, and it is the layer most people forget about.
“We want to avoid a surprise bill”
Self-hosting is not the lever here; query patterns are. Firestore bills per document read, so an admin tool that re-reads a whole collection on every keystroke will cost you far more than the hosting ever would. Worth auditing before you conclude the platform is expensive.
The part you can self-host
Here is the useful distinction. You cannot self-host the database. You can absolutely self-host everything you build on top of it — and for most teams, that is where the lock-in risk and the compliance surface actually live.
FireCMS is MIT-licensed and self-hostable. You deploy it in your own infrastructure, it authenticates against your own Firebase project, and it reads and writes your Firestore data under your own security rules. There is no third party in the data path: the content never leaves your project. If you later drop FireCMS, nothing needs migrating, because nothing was ever moved.
That gives you a stack where:
- The managed part is the part Google runs well and you would not want to run yourself.
- The part that encodes your business — schemas, permissions, editing workflows, custom views — is source you own and host.

If you truly need a self-hostable backend
Sometimes the honest answer is that Firebase is the wrong fit. If sovereignty is a hard requirement rather than a preference, look at a Postgres-based stack you can run yourself, and budget for the fact that you are giving up Firestore’s real-time sync and client SDKs to get it.
Do not, however, migrate your database because you were unhappy with your admin panel. Those are separate problems, and only one of them is expensive to fix.
